Overview.
Omaha Hi or just Omaha is played in the same way to Texas Holdem, except that nine cards are used, creating a wider array of possible combinations. This makes for a much more intricate game where you have to be really good in.
The rules of this game are really similar to Texas Holdem, so if you experience in those you are almost there. Anyway, they're quite simple. Unlike Texas Hold’em, Omaha deals 4 pocket cards (rather than two), and the showdown uses two pocket cards and 3 communal cards (rather than a choice of any combinations of communal and pocket cards).
Online poker rooms offer both Omaha Hi and Omaha Hi-Lo poker to you. The differences between the two games affect the way the pot is distributed. In Omaha Hi, the player with the strongest hand takes the entire pot, and the pot Omaha Hi-Lo is split between the players who have the best and worst hands.
In this article we will detail all essential steps to help you feel at home on the tables.
Cards are dealt from the place of Dealer, which rotates in a clockwise manner around the poker table after each hand. The player became as Dealer for a hand is identified by a round "D" button on the table in front him. The software automatically deals cards on behalf of the Dealer.
Blinds (Blind bets).
Omaha Hold’em is played with blind bets or blinds. Before the pocket cards are dealt, two players (called Big and Small Blind) to the left of the button post a small and a big blind accordingly to fill a starting pot.
The Deal.
Each player gets four cards, called pocket or hole cards. The cards are visible only to the player holding them.
Betting.
After the deal, there is a betting round. The player to the left of the Big Blind plays the first. Depending on prior activity in the hand a player can check, call, bet, raise, re-rase or fold. A betting round may circle the table several times if someone raises and re-raises the pot. The round ends when all players have either called the last bet or folded.
Buying the Pot.
If during a round of betting you make a bet and all opponents fold to you, you've bought the pot. You have the choice to show or muck your cards.
The Flop (3rd street).
The flop consists of three cards being dealt face up to the center of the table. These are communal cards, they are shared by all the players.
A round of betting will now begin, starting from the “under the gun” player (to the left of the dealer) and continuing to the left around the table.
The Turn (fourth street).
After the 2nd round, the fourth communal card is dealt. The 3rd round of betting takes place, starting with the 1st player to the left of the dealer who is still in the hand.
The River (fifth street).
The closing card is the river. The card is dealt face up to the center of the board, and is also a communal card. The idea is to accomplish the best five-card poker combination from the seven available (the two pocket and the five community cards).
The final round of betting now follows in the same fashion as early rounds. Those players that still remain after the ending of the betting then go to the showdown.
The Showdown.
It's time to demonstrate the cards. The remaining players cards will be automatically shown moving clockwise, unless a combination is weaker than the best hand shown. Then, you'll have the choice to show, or fold (without showing). The best five-card hand takes the pot.
And once more - TWO hole cards MUST be used to hit a hand - no more, no less.
